We are Sooo..excited here to announce that we have booked the fab Dina Wakley to come to our new studio to teach a series of workshops 27-29 March 2015
Dina Wakley is a mixed-media artist and teacher. She loves everything about art: creating it, thinking about it, looking at it, and teaching it. As a Ranger Signature Designer, Dina designs a line of mixed-media art supplies that includes acrylic paints, mediums, brushes, rubber stamps, stencils, and more. She also has recently published two Art Journal Books.
Dina is passionate about teaching art and in her spare time she is a docent at the Phoenix Art Museum, where she gives tours to school groups and gets kids excited about art.
She has travelled the world teaching her “Art Journal Play” series and was thrilled to be asked to share her passion and skills with us here in Ireland 🙂
So…. here are the details. Dina is going to teach 6 different 3 hour workshops over three days 27-29 March 2015. Here, in our NEW converted farmhouse SHOP & STUDIO in Tourmakeady, Co. Mayo.

We are 17km from Castlebar and Westport ( both on the Dublin-Westport train route), an hour’s drive from Galway and 3.5 hour’s from Dublin Airport and only 50 mins drive from Ireland West International Airport (pick-up can be arranged from the train stations and Ireland West Airport)
We live and work on a small farm on the lake shore in the shadow of the Partry mountains, a very, very beautiful part of the world…perfect place for Creating works of ART 🙂
There is plenty of accomodation locally, both self catering and B&B’s (links to follow), or you can travel the 35 mins into Westport and stay in one of the many lovely hotels.

My “Art Journal Play” classes are all about exploring and playing with art journaling techniques. The goal is to learn techniques, experiment, play, and make finished journal pages. We’ll be working in journals, but the techniques apply to all mixed-media projects (canvases, book-making, etc.).
Art Journal Play Series: Conquering Color (3-hour class)
Friday 27th March 2015 10.00am – 13.00pm Cost €65
Join me as we conquer color! We’re going to first make color charts with our paints. Then we’ll practice specific color schemes. We’ll play with split-complementary, triadic, analogous with complement, to name a few. I’ll show you how to take each color scheme and make a vibrant page with it. Along the way I’ll give you tips and techniques for managing color and using contrast effectively. We’ll mix ink and acrylics to give interesting layers and color effects.
Please bring:
- Basic tool kit: Ranger craft sheet, paint brushes, pencil, scissors, palette knife, baby wipes, old gift card to use as a scraper.
- Your art journal (I recommend the Dylusions journal by Ranger)
- Gesso
- Gel medium (I prefer soft-gel matte)
- Acrylic paints
- Rubber stamps–bring your “muses.” I will have some to share, too!
- Black Ink Pad (I like Archival by Ranger). I will have several to share, if you don’t have one.
- Pen(s) for journaling onto your pages
- Optional: your own ink spray and stencils. I will have plenty for class use, but if you have your own, you won’t have to share.
Art Journal Play Series: Beyond the Ink Pad (3-hour class)
Friday 27th March 2015 15.00pm – 18.00pm Cost €65
In this class, we’ll explore one of our favorite addictions, rubber stamps. But we are going to go beyond the ink pad and use stamps with Pan Pastels, acrylic paints, crayons, gelatos, and more. I will show you techniques for creating and then we will build finished pages on top of our stamping–that means we’ll consider color, composition and layers as we finish our work.
Please bring:
- Basic tool kit: Ranger craft sheet, paint brushes, pencil, scissors, palette knife, baby wipes, old gift card to use as a scraper.
- Your art journal (I recommend the Dylusions journal by Ranger)
- Gesso
- Gel medium (I prefer soft-gel matte)
- Acrylic paints
- Rubber stamps–bring your “muses.” I will have some to share, too!

Art Journal Play Series: Delightful Painted Deli Paper (3-hour class)
Saturday 28th March 2015 10.00 – 13.00 Cost €65
Join me as we create random painted deli papers. We’ll paint, scrape, rub, stencil, and stamp. Then I’ll show you my favorite ways to use the deli papers in your journaling and mixed-media projects.
Please bring:
- Basic tool kit: Ranger craft sheet, paint brushes, pencil, scissors, palette knife, baby wipes, old gift card to use as a scraper.
- White acrylic gesso
- Gel medium (I prefer soft gel matte) or a glue stick (I like the Ranger glue stick)
- Acrylic paint. Bring your favorite colors.

Art Journal Play Series: Creature Feature (3-hour class)
Saturday 28th March 2015 15.00 – 18.00 Cost €65
Ah, little creatures. You can call them spirit animals, good luck charms, treasured companions, or even just a peek into mother nature’s goodness. Let’s spend a day creating creatures for our art work. Birds, dogs, foxes, anything goes! I’ll show you various art techniques for getting creatures into your work. We’ll be stamping with PanPastels and Gelatos, and even drawing and collaging, with lots of scribbles and artsy lines. We’ll celebrate our creatures with bright colors and marks.
Please bring:
- Basic tool kit: Ranger craft sheet, paint brushes, pencil, scissors, palette knife, baby wipes, old gift card to use as a scraper.
- Your art journal (I recommend the Dylusions journal by Ranger)
- White acrylic gesso
- Gel medium (I prefer soft gel matte) or a glue stick (I like the Ranger glue stick)
- Acrylic paint. Bring your favorite colors, and please include white, a dark neutral, and a red/pink and a yellow.
- Plastic palette knife
- Paintbrushes
- Print-outs of your favorite creatures. Butterflies, birds, dogs, coyotes anything!
- Optional: Your own black Archival ink pad. I will have some to share, but it’s nice to have your own.
Art Journal Play Series: Marvelous Mark Making (3-hour class)
Sunday 29th March 2015 10.00am – 13.00pm Cost €65
Mark-making is one of my obsessions! Join me for some mark-making play time. We’ll start pages with marks made from all kinds of materials and media. We’ll use string, sticks, cards, paint lids, and just play and see what happens. Then we’ll “read” our marks and listen to what they’re saying. We’ll turn the marks into layers, and then the layers into finished journal pages. You’ll be surprised how this class will help you grow and stretch as an artist!
Please bring:
- Basic tool kit: Ranger craft sheet, paint brushes, pencil, scissors, palette knife, baby wipes, old gift card to use as a scraper.
- Your art journal (I recommend the Dylusions journal by Ranger)
- Gesso
- Acrylic paints

Facing the Facts (3-hour class)
Sunday 29th March 2015 14.30am – 17.30pm Cost €65
I always say I don’t know how to draw, yet I have taught myself how to draw faces. Guess what, you can draw faces, too! I will teach you how to draw a face with easy tips and tricks. We’ll use the “magic pencil” to make your faces look artsy and interesting (and I will give you each your own pencil in your kit, so you’ll have one to play with at home). I’ll also show you how to paint the faces with artistic, fun colors. Even if you can’t draw, you can learn to draw faces. I promise!
Please bring:
- Basic tool kit: Ranger craft sheet, paint brushes, pencil, scissors, palette knife, baby wipes, old gift card to use as a scraper.
- White acrylic gesso
- Acrylic paints. Please include Titanium White and a dark color for shadows (like Raw Umber or Payne’s Grey.
- Gel medium (I prefer matte)
- A note about paint brushes: please include a small flat brush and a small round brush. I like the Claudine Hellmuth brush assortment by Ranger. They are inexpensive and good quality.
